Greetings Sean. Saw your vlog at DVTV and then here at deafread.com. For a change I decided to leave a comment here instead of at DVTV. The reason is simple. I wanted to see how much interest / traffic your vlog might attract without my presence. As always, my presence at anybody’s vlog almost always will attract higher traffic and comment so I wanted to stay out of this one and thought I’d comment here under your blog. While your vlog didn’t teach me anything new I’m sure it was beneficial for many others who didn’t know so I’ll still thank you for educating your fellow people. However in all honesty, I am afraid that your message, as clear as it was, will still not help people understand the protocol when they seek help from NAD. In short, your message was confusing, at best. If you could not have made it any more clearer than that then I can understand why people felt disconnected when it came down to NAD. In short, the organizational structure is complicated. And I’ll throw in something else here. The organizational structure is obsolete. It was built that way for an era known as industrial age. Wake up, my friend…. we’re no longer in the industrial age. We’re currently in the information age. Looks like NAD is due for some major adjustment. However I still appreciated what you tried to do.
Hello Barry,
It’s always good to hear from you. Any medium for you to reach out to me is fine with me.
I do appreciate your feedback and will continue to explore the ways to improve organizational structure. I believe you do have a clear understanding how long will it take to change an organizational structure (governance). Many of us are continuing to find ways to improve our governance, as always.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.
Best,
-Sean
Either I misunderstand your intent, or if I am correct, please confirm.
Since the NAD President is not a paid position, and if the President has a full-time job (outside of NAD), how is the President of NAD expect to “manage” The Office of the President? That would be a full-time job!
I don’t really understand why we would want such a hierarchy where we have the President and the CEO of NAD? The Board with the President administer the CEO and its staff.
Why have the staff at the NAD if we have “Office of the President?” I am not sure I understand how this works and why this is necessary.
Looks to me we are creating two “bureaucracies,” and now members have to deal with two “entities.”
Please correct me if I am wrong in my conclusion. Thank you.
Hello Marla,
Thank you for your time writing this comment. I’d be happy to clarify this.
Yes, being as a president of NAD is a definitely a full-time job. We have to compliment (and appreciate) these people who served under the role of President in NAD. They actually did two different jobs at the same time during their tenure. Fortunate for some of them, they do have generous employers who do share their passion in preserving, protecting and promoting the civil, human and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States of America which allowed them to serve the presidency of NAD.
Often, the perception in having lack of responses from NAD has to do with people who attempted in reaching out NAD in wrong channels. NAD is going through some transformation which should be able to resolve this perception. During this process of transition, Board of Directors in NAD is actively involved with front-end in dealing with constituents. In a theory, each Board of Directors carries fiduciary responsibilities within organization while the organization itself would be able to carry out their duties. Also, in NPO (policy and governance); Board of Directors are generally in responsible for searching and hire CEO or Executive Director (day-to-day operations). This is the main reason why I made this video to improve the communication between NAD and public.
Regarding “two entities”, in NAD’s case, it may look like we are creating two “entities”. In fact, it’s actually an entity since we are working together until NAD completes its transition process.
Best,
-Sean
