I share your sentiments for the most part. I think we are quick to embrace the technology and the freedom that comes with it, such as the flexibility to voice our opinions without borders. On the other hand, with technology, we are able to devise multiple email addresses and be anonymous so one could easily rig a petition with five or ten signatures all originating from one person.
However, regardless of the form of the petition, physical or online, it still accomplishes it’s mission when it makes people talk about it. It just happens that online petitions are easily created and reaches out to a way larger audience. For example, KONY 2012, the bus aide in Greece, NY, Trayvon Martin, and so forth.
For online petitions, perhaps it would be more beneficial to also provide more information on how you can show more support such as contacting a congressman via phone, mailing address, email, and so forth and put emphasis on those methods as versus checking a box and typing in an email address and hitting submit.
I guess you are pretty much right about being quick to embrace the technology & freedom in using internet/information sharing tool.
It’s interesting when you mentioned KONY 2012. As I, myself already signed up for it. I find it very riveting as I didn’t know who this person was till I checked this person at a website and immediately signed up to provide my support.
Other POV, will excessive petitions dilute it’s value?
Like someone mentioned this in DVTV, it generates a form of abuse.
Hmm.
Thanks for watching my vlog/thoughts and making the time to reply.
